Watering Closed Terrariums

The key to success is to watering closed terrariums ensure that the plants are watered enough to keep them healthy, while not drowning them in moisture. With the right approach, it is quite easy to look after the plants and enjoy an aesthetically pleasing result.

Watering Closed Terrariums

Before starting to water, it is important to see the condition of the plants and assess whether they need any water. Sometimes it’s not obvious by looking at the plants alone whether require watering, so it is recommended to check the moisture level of the soil by poking a finger into the soil, as nearly all closed terrarium plants can suffer if kept in sodden soil for prolonged periods of time. If your finger comes out fairly damp, then the plants likely need no water, meaning one less job for you!

Once you’ve decided that the plants do require some water, it can be provided in small doses. This is generally done using a syringe or a small watering can. A watering can should give a light and even spray, otherwise the water can gather in certain areas and possibly cause the plant to rot by from excessive moisture for too long. It is recommended to start with a few drops of water, then wait to see if the plants absorb them. If no droplets are seen after a while, a few more drops may be added until the plants have enough.

Unless the plants in the terrarium are suffering from prolonged dryness, it is likely that they will not require frequent watering, as the closed terrarium creates a tiny ecosystem. A good way to gauge how much water should be added is to look at the terrarium glass, as condensation should form if the environment is sufficiently moist. Some terrariums will require watering perhaps once every few months, while others may only need it once every year!

With the correct approach to watering and a bit of observation, it should be fairly easy to keep the closed terrarium well-watered and the plants healthy. Adequate watering can help the plants to thrive and create a fascinating display.

In Summary:

· Check how damp the soil is

· Check for any condensation

· Water evenly and in small amounts every few months / year
